Our verdict
The most you can get from a meditation app without paying: a huge free library, a free timer and live classes, with no ads. Quality varies, and courses and offline listening need MemberPlus.

Not measured: there’s no accuracy figure to measure in a meditation app, so this score rests on features, free tier, price, published evidence and consensus standing. We don't publish sub-scores.How we score apps.
Insight Timer is the meditation app to try first, because you may never need to pay for another. It has the largest free library we found, a free meditation timer and free live classes, with no ads. The catch is the other side of an open library: there’s so much that finding what works for you takes some sifting.
What Insight Timer does well
The free library is enormous. Insight Timer says it has more than 300,000 free guided meditations, sleep tracks, breathing exercises and talks, from thousands of teachers, plus hundreds of free courses. It covers everything from short breathing breaks to long body scans for sleep.
The timer is free and flexible. If you’d rather sit in silence, set a length, choose your bells and ambient sound, and begin. You don’t need anything else to build a daily habit.
Live classes are free. Teachers run live meditation and yoga classes, and only a few special events charge a small fee.
No ads. The company’s own line is “Free. No Ads. No AI.”
Where it falls short
Quality varies. With thousands of teachers, the voices, styles and production quality range widely. Start with well-rated sessions and save the teachers you like.
Structure costs extra. Most structured courses, and offline listening, need MemberPlus. If you want one guided path from day one, Headspace, or the free Healthy Minds Program, is more direct.
There’s little research on the app itself. One small trial found that 10 minutes a day for 30 days lowered anxiety scores compared with not using the app, but only 46 people were analyzed and they knew which group they were in. Research on mindfulness apps in general is broader, and it points to small benefits for anxiety and depression symptoms. Meditation can support your mental health; it isn’t a treatment for a condition.
Free vs paid
As of November 2026:
- Free: the timer, live classes, hundreds of courses and the full library of guided practices.
- MemberPlus, $59.99 a year or $9.99 a month: offline listening, thousands of courses, an advanced player and journal, and extra timer sounds. A family plan is $89.99 a year.
That’s the cheapest paid plan in our meditation ranking. For a daily practice, though, the free tier is enough.
Who it’s for
- You want to meditate daily without a subscription.
- You like variety, or you want to try different teachers and styles.
- You sometimes just want a good timer.
Who should skip it
- You want to be taught step by step. Headspace has the most structured beginner course; see our meditation app ranking.
- You want fewer choices. The Healthy Minds Program gives you one clear path, free.
How it compares
- vs. Headspace: far more free content. Headspace is more structured and costs $69.99 a year.
- vs. Calm: Calm leads on sleep stories but costs $79.99 a year on its website, with a thin free tier.
- vs. Healthy Minds Program: both cost nothing for daily use. Healthy Minds has more research and one clear path; Insight Timer has far more variety.
The bottom line
Insight Timer gives you more for free than any other meditation app we reviewed: a huge library, a good timer and live classes, with no ads. Expect to sift for teachers you like, and pay for MemberPlus only if you want offline listening or structured courses.
Frequently asked questions
Is Insight Timer really free?
Yes, for a daily practice. The timer, live classes, hundreds of courses and more than 300,000 guided practices, by Insight Timer’s count, are free, with no ads. MemberPlus, $59.99 a year as of November 2026, adds offline listening and most structured courses.
Is Insight Timer better than Headspace?
For free content, yes: Headspace offers very little without a subscription. Headspace is better if you want one structured course that teaches you step by step, and it costs $69.99 a year.
Is there evidence that Insight Timer works?
Only a little for the app itself. One small trial found that 10 minutes a day for 30 days lowered anxiety scores compared with not using it, but only 46 people were analyzed and they knew which group they were in. Across mindfulness apps, a 2024 meta-analysis of 45 trials found small benefits.
