The 5 Best Meditation Apps of 2026

You don’t need a subscription to meditate. Here’s which app gives you the most for free, and when paying makes sense.

You don’t need an app to meditate: a quiet spot and a timer will do. So the real question is what an app adds, and whether that’s worth a subscription. Our top pick is Insight Timer because it answers that best. It has the largest free library we found, more than 300,000 guided practices by its own count, plus a free meditation timer, free live classes and no paywall between you and a daily practice.

If you’d rather follow a program, the free Healthy Minds Program is backed by several randomized trials, and Headspace has the most structured beginner course. Calm leads on sleep stories, and Happier, formerly Ten Percent Happier, suits skeptics. One honest caveat for the whole category: subscriptions of $60 to $100 a year are expensive next to what a timer does, so start free. Prices are as of November 2026.

The picks, in detail

No. 1 · Best overall

Insight Timer

  • Not measured
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, web, Apple Watch
  • Price: Free; MemberPlus $59.99/yr

Insight Timer leads on what you get for nothing. Its free library holds more than 300,000 guided meditations, sleep tracks, breathing exercises and talks, by the company’s count, from thousands of teachers, plus hundreds of free courses and live classes. The timer is free too: set a length, choose your bells and sit on your own. There are no ads.

The trade-off of an open library is uneven quality, so expect to sift a little to find teachers you like. MemberPlus, $59.99 a year, adds offline listening and most structured courses, and some live events charge a small fee. Published research on the app itself is limited to one small trial.

Pros of Insight Timer

  • Biggest free library we found, with a free timer
  • Free live classes and no ads
  • Cheapest paid plan here, at $59.99/yr

Cons of Insight Timer

  • Quality varies across thousands of teachers
  • Offline listening and most courses need MemberPlus
  • Little research on the app itself
No. 2 · Best free, research-backed program

Healthy Minds Program

  • Not measured
  • Platforms: iOS, Android
  • Price: Free (donor-funded)

The Healthy Minds Program is free, with no in-app purchases. It’s funded by donors and made by Humin (formerly Healthy Minds Innovations), a nonprofit that works with the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Center for Healthy Minds. It teaches four skills, awareness, connection, insight and purpose, through structured daily training.

It has the research to back it up: in randomized trials, people using it reported less distress than people on a waitlist. Two caveats: researchers connected to the program ran those trials, and its content is narrower than Insight Timer’s.

Pros of Healthy Minds Program

  • Completely free, with no in-app purchases
  • Tested in several randomized trials
  • A clear, structured path

Cons of Healthy Minds Program

  • Trials were run by researchers linked to the program
  • Narrower library than Insight Timer
  • No Apple Watch app
No. 3 · Best structured course for beginners

Headspace

  • Not measured
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, Apple Watch
  • Price: $69.99/yr or $12.99/mo

Headspace is the one to choose if you want to be taught. Its Basics course walks you through the fundamentals in short daily sessions, and the rest of the app builds on it, with courses for stress, sleep and focus. A subscription also includes Ebb, Headspace’s AI companion.

Very little is free: after a trial, it costs $69.99 a year or $12.99 a month. Headspace has published research behind it, including a trial in 2,182 UK health workers that found small improvements in stress, depression and anxiety. Sword Health bought Headspace this fall, so plans and prices could change.

Pros of Headspace

  • Most structured beginner course here
  • Published research on the app
  • Sleep and focus content included

Cons of Headspace

  • Very little free content
  • $69.99/yr after the trial
  • New owner, so plans could change
No. 4 · Best for sleep stories

Calm

  • Not measured
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, web, Apple Watch
  • Price: $79.99/yr (web price)

Calm’s strength is sleep. Its Sleep Stories, narrated bedtime stories, are its signature feature, and the library also includes a daily guided session, music and expert-led courses. A small trial in college students found it reduced stress compared with a waitlist.

Calm recently raised its price, to $79.99 a year on its website, and its free tier is thin: a few stories and some music. If sleep is your main goal, try Insight Timer’s free sleep tracks before you pay.

Pros of Calm

  • Large library of sleep stories
  • Daily guided sessions, music and courses

Cons of Calm

  • Thin free tier
  • Price rose to $79.99/yr on its website
No. 5 · Best for skeptics

Happier (Ten Percent Happier)

  • Not measured
  • Platforms: iOS, Android, Apple Watch
  • Price: $99.99/yr

Happier, the app formerly called Ten Percent Happier, grew out of a brand built on meditation for skeptics. Its teaching is plain-spoken, from well-known teachers including Joseph Goldstein, Sharon Salzberg and Jeff Warren, co-author of Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics.

Its free tier is generous for this category: three courses and more than 50 guided meditations. The full plan is the most expensive here, at $99.99 a year, and there’s no web or desktop version. Co-founder Dan Harris has left the company, and we found no randomized trials of the app.

Pros of Happier (Ten Percent Happier)

  • Plain-spoken teaching from well-known teachers
  • Generous free tier: three courses and 50+ meditations

Cons of Happier (Ten Percent Happier)

  • Most expensive plan here ($99.99/yr)
  • No randomized trials of the app
  • No web or desktop version

How to choose

Decide what you want the app to do:

  • Support a daily practice for free: Insight Timer, or the Healthy Minds Program if you want a set path.
  • Teach you step by step: Headspace.
  • Help you fall asleep: Calm’s sleep stories, or Insight Timer’s free sleep tracks.
  • Win over a skeptic: Happier.

Before you subscribe to anything, use the free tier for a couple of weeks. If you’re still opening the app most days, a subscription may be worth it. If not, a free timer is all meditation strictly needs. Set a reminder before any free trial ends.

How we tested

We haven’t lab-measured meditation apps, so this ranking doesn’t rest on a measurement, and every app in it carries a “Not measured” label. We compared the apps on the features that matter for the job, what each free tier includes, what the paid plans cost and each app’s consensus standing: what independent reviewers and, where it exists, published research say about it. We checked every price against the app’s own plan pages and store listings in November 2026.

How we ranked: what each app gives you for a daily practice, then what’s free, then price, with published evidence and consensus standing weighed in. For context, a 2024 meta-analysis of 45 randomized trials of mindfulness apps found small improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms. That’s worth having, but no app here is a treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free meditation app?

Insight Timer, for the size of its free library and its free timer. The Healthy Minds Program is completely free too, with no in-app purchases, if you prefer a structured program. Read our Insight Timer review.

Is Headspace or Calm better?

Headspace if you want to learn meditation step by step; Calm if your main goal is falling asleep. Both have thin free tiers. As of November 2026, Headspace is $69.99 a year and Calm is $79.99 a year on its website.

Do meditation apps actually work?

Modestly. A 2024 meta-analysis of 45 randomized trials found that mindfulness apps produced small improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms compared with control groups. That can help, but an app isn’t a treatment for a mental health condition.

What happened to Ten Percent Happier?

It rebranded as Happier in September 2024. The app and its teachers carried over; co-founder Dan Harris left the company and kept the podcast.

Are meditation subscriptions worth the money?

Sometimes. Paid plans here run from $59.99 to $99.99 a year, which is a lot for a practice a free timer can support. Pay only if you’ll use the paid features, such as courses or offline listening, most weeks.
